Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mentoring and what is the purpose of this BAS Supervision Program?
Mentoring connects an experienced industry expert with a less experienced professional to help them enhance their skills and expertise. In the context of BAS supervision, the objective is for the Supervising BAS Agent (Supervisor) to provide the necessary oversight and guidance for the Bookkeeper as they deliver BAS services to their clients. This mentoring relationship ensures compliance with the registration and supervisory requirements outlined in section 20-5 of the Tax Agent Services Act 2019 (TASA). The purpose of this mentoring program is to provide supervision and guidance for bookkeepers who are either entering the industry or looking to grow and develop their business. The program supports their professional development
What is meant by a Supervising Agent?
Under the Tax Agent Services Act 2009 (TASA), supervisory arrangements are required for relevant experience and the provision of BAS Agent services. ‘Adequate supervision’ is not precisely defined, as it depends on the specific circumstances of each case. The appropriateness of supervision and control is assessed based on the actions taken by a BAS agent in the context of their situation, with guidance from case law.
What can you expect of me as your supervising agent?
You can expect confidentiality, responsiveness, and clear role boundaries. Your client base remains yours, and I will not contact your clients without your prior knowledge and permission. I am fully committed to your professional success and personal growth, offering encouragement, expert guidance, and tailored supervision. I will help you gain and exude confidence in your skills, and develop an ability to research and find answers. Being a member of IPA, I will make available IPA’s support resources to you to guide your journey.
What is expected of you as a mentee?
As a mentee, you are expected to diligently perform your bookkeeping tasks, maintain confidentiality, and prepare for our meetings in advance by noting down any questions. I understand that sometimes last-minute cancellations are unavoidable. However, whenever possible, I kindly ask that you please reschedule our meetings at least 24 hours in advance.
What are the fees?
The program costs $1999 (inc. GST) payable upfront. Or in 12 monthly instalments of $183.25 (inc. GST). Additional charges include $100 per BAS lodged (STP lodgements are free).
What's included in the program?
- Monthly meetings x 12 dedicated to developing your knowledge and honing your skills, and to building a solid base of your bookkeeping business.
- BAS Agent Supervision for your client work for 12 months (up to 5 clients). You will grow your own client base whilst gaining the requisite supervised work experience hours for your own BAS agent registration.
- As your supervisor, my Professional Indemnity Insurance will cover the client work I oversee, giving you peace of mind as you grow your practice.
- A cheer leader for your success and growth!
What can a BAS Agent do that a Bookkeeper can’t?
A BAS Agent holds a special registration allowing them to legally advise clients and represent them with the ATO on various tax matters, including GST, fuel tax, fringe benefits tax (FBT), and superannuation compliance. BAS agents also handle detailed payroll and reporting responsibilities, prepare and submit the Taxable Payments Annual Report (TPAR), manage PAYG instalments, and even assist with applications for an Australian Business Number (ABN) on behalf of clients.
Who is this program ideal for?
This program is perfect for bookkeepers working toward BAS Agent registration, who may already have clients but seek professional oversight and mentorship to boost confidence, skills, and compliance in their bookkeeping services, all whilst accumulating the requisite supervised hours for registration with the TPB as a BAS Agent.
How often are the mentoring sessions?
Mentoring sessions are held monthly for 30–45 minutes, with flexibility to address your unique goals, from specific client challenges to building your business. You also get access to a dedicated Slack channel for in-between-meeting queries for prompt response.
Can I bring my own clients?
Yes, you can bring up to 5 clients for oversight within the program. For those with more than five clients, there’s an additional fee to extend supervision.
